Process
First and foremost a thorough discussion of what you expect of your portrait, whom is to be portrayed and what the elements in the portrait should consist of, will take place between yourself and Johanna. It's important to get a feel for the subject, likes and dislikes, specific wishes and ideas.
Johanna prefers to work from photographs in the studio. The process of creating her portraits is not comparable to classical portraiture for which sittings are required, it is a process of creative thought that requires the peace and quiet of my own working environment. The portrait really comes together during the sketching process, it grows and starts to tell its story around the person or animal portrayed.
Photograph guidelines
The photographs you will send have to be superb quality. Johanna cannot work from photos that are blurry, too small in size to see facial details or otherwise imperfect. Digital photographs are accepted, but please ensure the highest resolution has been used and they are not blurry or otherwise imperfect.
Johanna reserves the right to refuse to accept a commission if the supplied photographic material is not of a satisfactory standard. Please note that a project deposit will not be accepted and asked for before all photographic material that Johanna will be expected to use for reference has been approved.
Follow your portrait's progress online
Once work has started on your portrait, you will be sent a username and password to log in to your private area on Johanna's website to follow progress on your portrait in a step-by-step format. You will be able to comment directly on progress of your portrait via the website and be a part of the process of creation with Johanna.
You will be asked to make a final decision on composition of the portrait at the 'grey' graphite sketch stage. This is because the media of coloured pencils and pastel pencils do not permit drastic compositional changes to be made at a later stage (unlike oils for instance).
